Copyright Scam and Proposed Changes to Copyright Registration

Copyright Scam

The Copyright Alliance was contacted regarding an email received by a fellow creator that was supposedly from the U.S. Copyright Office, which demanded information about an existing registration “as part of a routine federal record verification.” The text of the message was questionable, but the registration number in the message corresponded to one of the creator’s actual registration certificates.

Upon careful review, it was determined that the email is fraudulent, so we are alerting you to not respond to this type of communication if you receive it.

If you have any questions regarding emails received from the U.S. Copyright Office, please contact the Copyright Office directly as follows (but do not click on links in questionable emails received):

  • The Office’s phone number is: (202) 707-5959 or 1-877-476-0778 (toll free)

  • Press 0 to speak to an information specialist in the Public Information Office; Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday; to send an email inquiry to the Office, please go to:

Changes to the Copyright Registration Fee Structure

The U.S. Copyright Office recently announced that it is exploring whether it should introduce new copyright registration fee structures. Our friends at the Copyright Alliance put together a two part survey that we have combined into one.

We would like to hear from our community to assess your thoughts about the potential increases, and changes being considered in the registration process.

This survey will take approximately 15 minutes.  We encourage you to reply as soon as possible so we can include your thoughts in our response. Please feel free to forward this to the most appropriate person in your organization or to individual creators.
